Sometimes I feel like the current Oakland bands are stuck in the 80’s, but in the best way possible. With their debut LP, Rays has written 11 tracks that will take you back in time and throw you into the future all at once. They even share members with The World, one of my favorite bands.
A lot of this album feels very reminiscent of The Modern Lovers while still feeling very current and fresh. Tracks like “Over and Over” bring a nice slowness in contrast to the rest of the album.
FFO: BOY SPIT, MODERN LOVERS
French Vanilla consists of bassist and guitarist Ali, vocalist Sally, drummer Max and Daniel on bass and saxophone. They released their self- titled debut album on March 23rd, 2017.
Their songs are edgy. Reminiscent of 90’s riot grrl bands, Sally isn’t afraid to tell you like it is. And the saxophone adds a cool twist that I will never grow tired of.
They released a music video for the song “Carrie”, that is based on the Stephen King novel, and if you look closely you can spot Cleo Tucker of Girlpool. You can also catch Sally Spitz in Girlpool’s new music video for 123.
FFO: THE WORLD, X-RAY SPEX,
Yet again, Olympia, Washington has birthed a killer band with an unforgettable debut tape. Gen Pop is a fresh band featuring some iconic members of the Olympia scene, such as Maryjane Dunphe of Vexx and CC Dust, who we’ve talked about in previous issues.
In a quick ve minutes and only three tracks, Off Screen will have you bopping your head, rocking out, and at the end you’ll be ready for another listen. I love this style of shredding and harmonic guitars overtop simple drum beats with clear vocals. A must listen! I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
