NEGATIVE GEMINI, a.k.a. Lindsey French, gives six tracks of dynamic electronic music on her Bad Baby EP. French co-founded the label 100% Electronica with partner and vaporwave superstar GEORGE CLANTON. Don’t think that Negative Gemini produces vaporwave, though. She develops her own sound of moody dance music with dreamy synths and melancholy lyrics. Opposed to the club beat driven tracks of her 2016 full length Body Work, Bad Baby features more emotional dance songs you can bop along to. Catch the Brooklyn-based artist on tour this spring.
From the moment I laid eyes on this album’s artwork I knew I was in for a treat. BALANS is a two piece jam band from Slovenia but not in the typical sense. They are unlike any jam band I’ve heard before. While some tracks have a clear structure, others use improvisation and experimentation to build on the main melody and create many layers of texture. Their songs are enchanting but in a mysteriously haunting way. They are ideal for working out, making out and getting shit done. This album is so inspiring!
SISTERS MINDTRAP is Donna and Carol “MindTrap” of São Paulo, Brazil. Their new EP is just over 4 minutes long, but “Sweet Warrior” and “Someday” will leave you searching for more. With a guitar and drum kit they meld blues with garage rock. In Someday they sing “Someday, we will be ne, the sun will shine, again” soulfully over bits of tambourine. The most powerful moments happen when they sing in unison before breaking into an energetic instrumental section. -J
Spiraling is the first full length release by New Orleans based no wave punk band, SPECIAL INTEREST. Since it was released, the band has received a substantial amount of praise which catapulted them into a East Coast/Midwest tour during the summer of 2018. Every bit of their acknowledgment is well deserved. From the very first track it’s apparent that their music is unlike any other punk band. Their lyrics and attitudes are influenced by nihilism. They tease the bougie in “Art Walk”, question the authority’s prejudice in “Young, Gifted, Black, In Leather”, and ultimately culminate an album that is politically charged while still keeping their cool.
In the first single off of their upcoming album Mating Surfaces, Portland post-punk band LITHICS brings a phenomenal groove, intricacy, and energy to their classic sound. Clocking in at
just over two minutes, I’ve probably already listened to “Excuse Generator” about fifty times. It’s an unbelievably catchy teaser to their upcoming album, Mating Surfaces, coming out May 25th on Kill Rock Stars. I can’t believe how much
